Crete: 3 immigrants dead, 16 missing

A human tragedy occurred at down at the port of Souda when 46 immigrants from Bangladesh jumped from the ferry “Ionian King” into the sea. The ferry was carrying  evacuees from Libya. When the boat reached the Cretan port of Souda, the immigrants saw police on the coast and jumped into the sea, fearing that they would be arrested and deported.

At least 3 immigrants lost their lives, while 16 are reportedly still missing.There is a search and rescue operation on the way to locate those missing. 24 people have been taken to the hospital.

The Cyprus-flagged ship was carrying a total of 1280 evacuees from Libya.
