11th day of hungerstrike


Τhe 50 migrant workers on the 7th floor of the Labor Centre in Thessaloniki have been on hunger strike for 11 days now and continue with determination.

Immigrant and refugee men and women from migrants’ organizations and communities from the whole prefecture of Thessaloniki met in an open assembly with the migrant hunger strikers at the Labor Centre in Thessaloniki. Representatives from the Albanian Immigrants Association ‘Mother Tereza’, the Nigerian Community, the Assembly of the Refugee Hostel, the Solidarity Committee for Political Prisoners from Turkey and Kurdistan, as well as immigrants and refugees from Senegal, Iran and Iraq visited the hunger strikers, offered their financial support, and noted that “the struggle of the 300 migrant hunger strikers is our common struggle, it  is the struggle of all immigrants and refugees”. On Monday, February 7, at 7pm there will be a new assembly of immigrants and refugees at the Labor Centre in preparation for a protest by immigrants and refugees outside the Local Government Office of Macedonia and Thrace.

On Sunday, February 6, on the 1st floor of the Labor Centre there will be an open meeting of information and coordination of solidarity actions called by first degree trade unions of hire-work engineers and technicians, education workers, precarious workers in education and exclusive nurses.

Today, among others, the Union of Workers in Local Government and Municipal Offices in Thessaloniki, the Association of Post Office Workers in Thessaloniki, as well as the General Union of Palestinian Students in Northern Greece sent messages expressing their support and solidarity to the migrant workers on hunger strike.

The Open Solidarity Initiative invites everyone to the interventions and solidarity actions in the next days:

On Saturday, February 5, at 7pm, there will be a solidarity concert at the square in front of the Labor Centre.

On Tuesday, Feb 8, a march in the Western neighborhoods will depart at 6pm from the Ambelokipi Square.

On Thursday, Feb 10, a march in the Toumba area will depart at 6pm from Aghia Varvara church.
