Modern Greek courses for immigrants with an “Inquisition” twist

The opportunities for free lessons of Greek in Greece had been and still are very scarce – although the solidarity movement has been for years trying hard to ameliorate this- , but even when they are provided, they are not allowed to go independent from the Greek Chistian Orthodox ideological and institutional nexus.  We translate on this a tvxs article.

A course of Greek, funded by the European Union, is now running, and those who wish to acquire the Greek citizenship are required to attend it. In East Thessaloniki these courses take place in churches with the priests assuming the role of educators….

This is the course «Ulysses», a seminar of “Greek language, history, and culture” of 150 hours, which is mandatory for immigrants who wish to obtain a 5-year residence permit in our country and thus to move closer to the acquisition of citizenship.

The seminar is offered by the Ministry of Education, with funding from the European Union, and the responsibility for its carrying out lays with the Centers for Adult Education (KEE) and the Institute of Life-Long Education (ΙΔΕΚΕ).  The Greek Church, however, has joined the game, since the funding from the European Union is quite big.

In Thessaloniki, in the church «Panagia Acheiropoiitos», the priests have taken the role of educators, teaching Greek to people from around the world….in the Chamber of Memorial Services. The website of KEE does not mention the seminars in the church, while the eastern Thessaloniki KEE does not appear to run any courses of Greek.

As usual, questions regarding financial transactions between the Ministry and the Church remain unanswered. It is surprising, however, that the hope of  immigrants of other religious beliefs for permanent residence in the country should rest in the hands of priests, supposedly promoting intercultural learning in Orthodox Christian settings.

Murder at workplaces – Greek and migrant workers have their share of death

Posted by clandestina on 9 March 2009

One more migrant worker was killed on Friday the 6th of March afternoon due to the absence of protective measures in the construction industry. The deseased was a 23 year old builder from Syria.  He lost his balance and fell from the second floor of the building he worked on in the municipality of Kouloukonas in Rethymnon, Crete. He was transferred immediately to the Health Center of Anogeia but by then he had already passed away.

After the death of the worker, the contractor disappeared, while the Trade Union Center of Rethimnon simply expressed their regret and condemned – as usual – the government for the lack of audit committees to check at work sites.  This, in an area where informal (low paid, uninsured, unsafe) labour is the rule, as the Labour Inspection agency of the state itself admits.

Yesterday, a 53 year old Greek who had been working at the “Chalyves Karali” steel factory near Larissa died of heart attack, caused by the work overload.  As the Union of Metal Workers of Larissa write, the father of two as well as his 60 fellow workers had been unpaid their regular wages for 3 months now, while overtime money had not been paid for several more.

Anti-fascist protests end in riots, neo-nazi headquarters torched to the ground in Athens

Protest marches in response to the fascist-parastate handgrenade attack against the Immigrants’ Social Centre in Athens erupt in riots seeing neonazi national offices burned.

Riots broke out twice during the last week, both times in during protest marches against the fascist-parastate attack against the Immigrants’ Social Center in Exarcheia with a hand-grenade on the 24th of February.

During the first march two days after the attack, anarchist protesters detached themselves from the main body of the demo to attack the HQs of Apogevmatini, an ultra-conservative daily making consistent attacks on social and labour movements, whose editor in chief, Momferatos, had been executed by N17 guerrillas in the mid 80s, for his cooperation with the CIA during and after the colonels’ junta.

The much larger protest march that took to the streets of Athens on Thursday 5/3 erupted in extended street battles between protesters and provocative riot police forces attacked the demo. During the clashes that spread throughout the city centre several banks and expensive shops were destroyed, while protesters broke into the offices of Golden Dawn [Xrysi Avgi] the neonazi parastate organisation responsible for numerous assassination attempts against immigrants, anarchists and the left, as well as a campaign of terror against radical infrastructures. The offices were torched to the ground.

During the corresponding antifascist protest march of the same day in Salonica, street battles erupted between protesters and the riot police along the city’s central boulevard.

Criminal investigation in the case of the Afghan refugee who supposedly committed suicide in police station

Posted by clandestina on 7 March 2009

Some days ago we wrote (in this post) about the case of a young Afghan refugee who died in the Elliniko Police detention space.  The first  information from official sources spoke of suicide.   The inhuman conditions and the gross injustice of detention  make suicides  plausible .  But the truth now emerges even more bleak:  Najib’s  brothers saw his dead body and their brother had been evidently tortured and most likely murdered.

We translate below parts of a relevant article in the Eleftherotypia newspaper.  Thanks to the comrades of the Initiative of Refugees, Immigrants and Solidarios  for following and publishing about the issue (here, where a post in Greek and more links to newpaper articles can be found).

A Young Afghan refugee died in a Police Station; the officers had been since assuring that the death was self-inflicted … suicide by strangulation.

Young migrant severely injured by lorry at Patras’ port – barricades and confrontations with the police

Α riot erupted yesterday night, the 2nd of March, at the coastline near the port of Patras, after a young migrant who tried to jump on – or rather  under –  a lorry, which was to board on the ferry to Italy, ended up severely injured.   It seems that the young migrant failed in his attempt to board and fell in the middle of the road;  a lorry that was coming next sped up and hit him.   He is now at the intensive care unit.

The migrants who saw the incident and more from the nearby camp arrived to take care of their injured fellow.  The riot and coastguard police also arrived immediately and used teargas to disband the people gathered on the spot. The enraged immigrants set up barricades and defended themselves by throwing stones.  Soon, parastate indignated citizens scum  (see this post about them) arrived to the help of the police.   There were injuries on both sides.

We translate below the first announcement of the new Initiative of Refugees, Migrants and Solidarios which formed against the continuous crime the state and police commit at the Petrou Ralli ave. Asylum Police in Athens (read more about this here ).  The original post in Greek and other languages is at the Initiative’s blog  here.

We are an initiative of refugees, migrants and people in solidarity with them who do not want to remain silent about what happens at the refugees-immigrants concentration camp here at the AliensPolice in Petrou Ralli.   We are enraged by the brutality and injustice at the queues of the misery and inhumanity.  Any person with dignity feels that there can be no justice and freedom for anyone, if not for everyone.
